Putting on your oxygen mask – a (timely) guide to “self-care”

The run up to Christmas is often far from peaceful. Perhaps at this busy time of year we can remind ourselves to be kind and generous to ourselves.

If you’ve been following the Mindful Alchemy page, you’ll know that around 3 years ago a men’s group was set up and run on the first Thursday of the month from the Bird in Hand pub in Wordsley. The aim of the session was to offer local blokes a “safe space” to come along and get stuff off their chests be, it loneliness, relationship issues, financial worries, work problems etc. Initially, the group was well supported but, over time, numbers have dwindled and sadly it feels like it’s time to call it a day.I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has come along to MenTalk@TheBirdie since its “doors opened”, to Paula who has provided both support and the room each month and to those of you who have followed this page as a result of the group and shared or commented on any of the posts. We are constantly told that men’s mental health is a real issue and it seems ironic that if this is the case, that this group that has offered support is now closing. If you are, or know of someone who is struggling, Tough Enough to Care offers support in the local area and I believe that a Stourbridge branch of Andy’s Man Club is due to start soon. If you need to talk, seek help sooner rather than later! So, have a great festive season and, once again quoting Frazier Crane, I wish you “Good mental health” both now and throughout the coming year. #mensmentalhealth #mensmentalhealthawearness #toughenoughtocare #andysmanclubuk ... Although Christmas is portrayed as the “most won Although Christmas is portrayed as the “most wonderful time of the year”, for many it can be very challenging. Loneliness and isolation, feeling like you’re missing out on the “good times” others are having…..going into debt to make sure those “must have items” are bought and ready to wrap…not to mention the general overindulgence and the guilt that often brings with it….

If you are concerned about any of these things or just need to get some “stuff” off your chest, why not come along to the next MenTalk@TheBirdie session - Thursday, December 4th, 7.30-8.30 in the back room of the Bird in Hand on the corner of John Street, Wordsley, DY8 5YS.

For further details, contact Nick - info@mindfulalchemy.co.uk or just come along on the night….

After a recent trip to Scandinavia, I’ve been re After a recent trip to Scandinavia, I’ve been reading about its people. The author Michael Booth, in his book “The almost nearly perfect people”, shares a story about the Finns and their lack of desire to have conversation.

“Two Finns meet on the street. Hannu says to Jaakko, “Fancy a drink?”. Jaakko nods and they head off to Hannu’s house.
They drink the first bottle of vodka in silence.
As he opens the next, Hannu asks Jaakko, “So, how are you?”
Jaakko replies tetchily, “I thought we were here to have a drink?”

I guess the story can be interpreted in different ways but I wonder how many of us deal with our problems by drinking, smoking, drug taking, eating etc rather than having a meaningful conversation about how we’re actually feeling…. These sessions are free and offer a “safe space” to come along and have a chat with like minded blokes.

For more information contact Nick via email - info@mindfulalchemy.co.uk - or just come along at 7.30 on November 6th.

I’ve been thinking about this group a lot lately I’ve been thinking about this group a lot lately and I’ve been reminded about the “Starfish Story” originally by Loren Eisley I believe. It goes like this:

“One day a man was walking along the beach, when he noticed a boy hurriedly picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, “Young man, what are you doing?”.

The boy replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”

The man laughed to himself and said, “Don’t you realise there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make any difference!”

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said, “I made a difference to that one!”

Over the last couple of years, since these sessions started, people have come and gone for all sorts of reasons and I’m hoping, like that boy throwing starfish back into the sea, the group has made a difference to those that have attended.

So, if you are struggling in some way: anxiety, depression, loneliness…whatever, these sessions offer a “safe space” and at least some support. We may not have all the answers but just coming along may make a difference…. The sessions are completely free and open to all men in the area, not just pub regulars. For more details, contact Nick by email - info@mindfulalchemy.co.uk or just come along on August 7th, you can be assured of a warm welcome.

Sometimes it becomes a challenge to write somethin Sometimes it becomes a challenge to write something a little different to generate interest….so, this month, I asked one of the group members to say how attending the group had helped. Here’s what he said….

“I’ve been attending the Men’s Talk group at The Bird in Hand for over a year now, and I can honestly say it’s been a life changing experience. The group is made up of kind, supportive and open minded individuals who create a truly safe space for us to share our thoughts and feelings. I’ve found it incredibly valuable to connect with other men who understand and support each through life’s ups and downs. The group’s consistency and camaraderie has helped me grow as a person and I’m grateful for the experience. If you’re looking for a supportive community to explore your thoughts and emotions, I highly recommend Men’s Talk at the Bird in Hand…”

Nuff said…

The next session will be held in the back room of the Bird in Hand, John Street, Wordsley between 7.30 and 8.30 on Thursday, May 1st. Back in 2020, I started to record and publish a se Back in 2020, I started to record and publish a series of podcasts under the title of “Stress Less in 2020”. The first episode gave an introduction to mindfulness followed by two others which explained how becoming more mindful could actually help to manage stress and build resilience. These couldn’t have been more timely as we entered lockdown periods.

Another three episodes were recorded under the title of “Take a break…stress less” and included versions of The Body Scan and Awareness of Breath meditations along with, what became quite popular, The Chocolate Meditation.

I have recently changed my podcast hosting platform to Spotify for Creators and have re-named the show to align with my business venture. I intend to record some more episodes in the near future. In the meantime, if you’re interested in finding out more about mindfulness or would like to try out some short meditations for yourself, why not give the podcast a listen? You’ll find it on Spotify or Apple Podcasts - search for “The Mindful Alchemy Podcast with Nick Reeves”

Hope you enjoy it…if you do, why not subscribe?

MenTalk@TheBirdie was set up almost two years ago MenTalk@TheBirdie was set up almost two years ago to give local men a “safe space” to discuss any issues that they may be facing. On Thursday, April 3rd, the doors are being flung open to anyone who would like to come along and join….

So why come to a group like this?

You may feel lonely and isolated - if you come along you may find someone who feels just the same….
You may be living with the consequences of a poor decision - no one is perfect, we’ve all made mistakes, you may just meet someone who’s done something similar and can talk you through what they did to put things right….
You may have a lot going on at the moment and just need a listening ear - you may not get all the answers but we may know of people who can give you some support…
You may be feeling stressed or anxious - you may learn some simple techniques that could help you to “re-balance”….
You might just want to meet some new people - we’re a friendly bunch and you can be assured of a warm welcome….

Just a few reasons to give Let’sTalk@TheBirdie a go. The group is free, open to all, not just pub regulars, and while it’s not about “getting some therapy”, spending time with others, forming connections and talking can be very therapeutic. If you’d like more details, email Nick - info@mindfulalchemy.co.uk or just come along on April 3rd. We look forward to seeing you then….

The MenTalk@TheBirdie session started almost 2 yea The MenTalk@TheBirdie session started almost 2 years ago in April 2023, the idea being to give local men a “safe space” to “open up” and get anything that may be bothering them “off their chest” before it became a real problem. The sessions have always been attended but, to be perfectly honest, the numbers have fluctuated greatly and have, on occasions, been very low. This has been a surprise as men’s mental health has been a hot topic in the media for quite a long time. I would, however, like to think that those who have come along on a regular basis have benefitted from the group….

By way of a change, for the. April session, we’re “opening the doors” to anyone who would like to come along. This is not intended to be a therapy session but, just talking to others who may be in a similar boat can be very therapeutic. I’m aware there are other groups in the area that meet regularly to support people and it will be interesting to see whether there is a real need for a group like this.

The session is free and open to all, not just for pub regulars. If you think the group may be of benefit to you, why not come along on April 3rd and give it a go? Or, if you’d like further details, contact Nick via email - info@mindfulalchemy.co.uk.

Look forward to seeing you soon…..
